The department of English envisions to be a centre of excellence in teaching-learning English language and literatures, research and innovation in broader socio-cultural-environmental perspectives and prepare the graduates for meeting skilfully the defining challenges of the 21st century.
The mission statements of the ENG Department of GUB are:
M1: To impart high quality education at the undergraduate level with an emphasis on basic and advanced knowledge of English language and literature
M2: To establish the department as a nationally and internationally recognized research centre with observable results and innovations and integrate them into an interdisciplinary approach.
M3: To make the students academically competent, ethically driven, socially responsible citizens and skilled communicators within the global village
M4: To hone the students’ required skills to solve the complex socio-cultural-environmental- technological problems of the 21st century.
The objectives of a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English Studies are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that equips them with the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities to excel in the study of language and literature. The program’s goals typically include:
To provide the students with an extensive knowledge of relevant areas within English studies, including literature, literary history, critical theory and linguistics
To help students achieve high proficiency in English through a comprehensive training in listening, speaking, reading and writing
To involve students in skills and techniques necessary for the appreciation and enjoyment of English literature and language
To familiarize the students with the vivid applications as well as the practical utilities of English studies in the modern life
To prepare the students for creative works and modern research by broadening their faculty of observation, interpretation and critical thinking
To offer the students with meaningful education supportive of the development of individualism, professional skills and social values
The program educational objectives (PEO) of the ENG department of Green University of Bangladesh have been set in such a way so that after graduation the students can demonstrate:
PEO 1 | Graduates will encounter the challenges squarely in workplaces and establish themselves as leading professionals in public and private sectors and in national and international areas in the field of language, literature, Linguistics and ELT. |

The target competencies for the English program are categorized into two broad areas: General competencies and Discipline-Specific Competencies. The General competencies focus on developing essential academic, intellectual, and transferable skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, ethical awareness, and independent learning—abilities that prepare students for diverse professional and academic settings. The Discipline-Specific Competencies, on the other hand, emphasize the specialized knowledge and skills central to the study of English language and literature. These include proficiency in linguistic analysis, literary interpretation, creative and analytical writing, research methodology, and the application of theoretical frameworks in understanding texts and contexts. Together, these competencies ensure that graduates of the Department of English, Green University of Bangladesh, are well-equipped with both the foundational and specialized abilities necessary for scholarly excellence, professional growth, and lifelong learning.
