Seminar on Translation Studies and launching programme of Translation Magazine

The Department of English, Green University of Bangladesh, organized a seminar on the Reflections on Translation Studies and a launching programme of its Translation Magazine, Logic, Rhetoric, Silence on Thursday, 15 June 2023 at 3:30 P.M. in room A-302, Building A. Eminent Scholar of the Department of English, University of Dhaka, Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam was present as the keynote speaker in the seminar. Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam is the Director of Sheikh Mujib Research Institute for Peace and Liberty, University of Dhaka and Supernumerary Professor of its Department of English. He received the Bangla Academy Puroshkar (Literature Award) for Translation in 2013. His forthcoming works include a selection of translations of Rabindranath’s song-lyrics from Tagore’s Gitabitan.

Afterwards, Mr. Md. Shamim Mondol, Assistant Professor, Department of English, welcomed the keynote speaker and introduced his biography. After that Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam was received with flowers and a crest.

In the keynote speech, Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam, reflected on the history and importance of Translation Studies and his experiences as a translator. He said that translation can help us to be proficient in the source language and the target language. He mentioned that a translation can be rewritten several times as there is no perfect version of a translation. A translator receives recognition and honor for his contribution. He suggested that teachers and students of English should translate and take it as a challenge. Also, he talks about aiming at perfection and climbing the mountain of knowledge through this. He mentioned that translation can be a source of earning also.

Honorable Vice Chancellor of Green University of Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir graced the event as the chief guest. On this occasion, he said that the Department of English has created a momentum for Green University of Bangladesh by publishing its first Translation Magazine, Logic, Rhetoric, Silence. He highly appreciated the contribution of the editors and novice translators for making this a success. Also, he put emphasis on the significance of translation of the textbooks for all the departments for their diversified fields of study so that more research activities and learning activities can take place.

Also, Prof. K. M. Wazed Kabir, Professor, Dept. of English and Proctor, Green University of Bangladesh, joined the seminar as a discussant. He talked about the theoretical aspects of Translation Studies and Logic, Rhetoric, Silence.

Afterwards, two of the contributors shared their experiences. After that Mr. Ashik Istiak, Assistant Professor, Department of English, gave a short speech on his and Ms. Aklima Akter’s relentless efforts as the editors of Translation Magazine, Logic, Rhetoric, Silence. Also, he requested this legacy to be carried forward by the faculty members of the department in the coming days.

The Chairperson of the Department of English and Director of IQAC, Green University of Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. M. Shahidullah, presided over the programme. He appreciated the editors Mr. Ashik Istiak, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Ms. Aklima Akter, Lecturer, Department of English, for their tremendous efforts and hard work in the publication of Logic, Rhetoric, Silence. In addition, he praised Mr. Md. Shamim Mondol, Assistant Professor, Department of English for writing the preface of Logic, Rhetoric, Silence. Also, he appreciated the organizers, faculty members and the contributors for joining us.
